To Americans, breakfast is a big deal with the mountains of pancakes, along with pounds of bacon and eggs. In most foreign countries, classic American breakfast is an absurd tradition. I’ve gathered a list of the two best breakfast spots in Switzerland; one a big American breakfast, and one a classic European breakfast.



  1. Cafe & Conditorei 1842- Zurich

A classic European breakfast, other than a coffee and cigarette, consists of just a simple pastry. Conditorei 1842 is known for their decadent and delicious homemade pastries. The “Swiss Classic” breakfast at Conditorei comes with a croissant with butter, and your choice of hot drink. I found this very surprising because to Americans that is just a small snack, but I found it very delicious and wasn’t left in a breakfast coma. Overall, this restaurant had the best pastries that you can tell are homemade and fresh, I also really liked how they have everything available for takeaway or dining in.



  1. HORIZON 10 Hilton Hotel- Zurich

Hotels are really the only places in Europe where you can find an American breakfast, and even then it’s buffet style with only a couple things. The continental breakfast consists of yogurt, granola, cold meats and cheese, cereal, and croissants. Some things can be made to order like omelets and oatmeal, but unfortunately not as good as a traditional stack of flapjacks. Definitely not a breakfast meal that I’m used to, but I'm starting to like the idea of only a pastry and coffee for breakfast. Although I’m a big believer that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, it doesn't mean that it has to be this huge extravagant meal that leaves you stuffed. Overall, the breakfast selection could be amped up a bit, especially for a known tourist hotel. But taking a look at their extravagant lunch and dinner menus, it’s clear that Europeans really just don't care for big breakfasts.
